 VIETNAM MYTHS & STOLEN VALOR

Many people harbor distorted views about Vietnam Vets. Perhaps thinking that Vietnam Vets are by-and-large a group of rag-tag whiners and losers. Most Americans I suspect have derived this point of view over the decades from the media or from observing the occasional person or group who purports to represent - or to speak for - ALL the veterans who served in Vietnam. I have a natural distrust of small samplings that lead to broad, sweeping generalzations. So I did some searching on the internet. Listed below are only a few of the many scores of webpages on the topic.

Personally, I have never known, nor have I ever met a Vietnam Vet who fit those loser sterotypes that have been foisted upon our nation during the past 35 years. But of course, that is only one person's view isn't it? Don't trust my observation. Don't trust small samples. A world of information is at your fingertips. Try a good search engine --- or three. Find more information.  Challenge your own preconcieved notions. There is much more to know out there.     Sid's MAIN ENGINES

For the record:
I AM NOT A VIETNAM COMBAT VETERAN.
I spent a 22 year career in the US Navy, mostly punching holes in the ocean in submarines. It was all "black ops" to us.

  • From the OPED Section of the JOHN M. ASHBROOK CENTER FOR PUBLIC AFFAIRS
An excerpt:      "Stolen Valor makes clear why, intentionally or not, events like "The Sixties" (the 1999 TV "mini-series") slander all those who served in Vietnam. The fact is that Vietnam veterans have fared as well or better than any other generation of warriors, and it's about time that the myths that have tainted America's view of Vietnam veterans are put to rest. By unmasking the despicable phonies who have stolen the honor of the legitimate Vietnam veterans and exposing the complicity of the press in this theft, Mr. Burkett has done an immense service to his fellow veterans, and by extension to his country."
