I am pleased to announce that the efforts of a coalition of four submarine veteran Bases efforts have been realized. After more than a year in the hopper; the Missouri Senate approved the Bill that will designate fifty-four miles of Interstate 70 in Missouri as the United States Submarine Veterans Memorial Highway. Fifty-four? Yes, a mile for each of the 52 submarines lost during WWII including the THRESHER and SCORPION lost during the Cold War. Scheduled to be dedicated in August of 2004.
Those of you that will be traveling West on I-70 to attend the 2005 National Convention in Kansas City, will travel the 54 miles of the US Submarine Veterans Memorial Highway on your way to Kansas City. Look for it.. While we were known as the Silent Service, we are Silent no more!!! The Coalition of Submarine Veteran organization supporters for this Missouri Memorial project are: ..Dry Docked Dolphins, US SubVets of
WWII of Wichita Kansas We are very pleased to mark fifty-four miles of the some 245 miles of I 70 across Missouri as the US Submarine Veterans Memorial Highway. A year and a 1/2 in the making, it was a labor of love for many in the above five SubVet organizations. And the effort of the members of these organizations will be rewarded by the more than 1,000,000 automobiles and an estimated 1.5 million passengers that pass through this corridor each month, every day of the year. Indeed, It is time that the Silent Service is silent no more! Art Randall |
