From: John Crouse – Curator St Marys Submarine Museum submus@tds.net Subject: Historical documents of Submarine Operations in WWII - which were bequeathed from the Ben Bastura Submarine Library & Museum in 2003 - are now archived at the St. Marys Submarine Museum .
We have discovered a copy of the official Submarine history from WWII. What many SubVets may not be aware of is that VADM Lockwood, and about 30 WWII Submarine officers, wrote the official history and submitted it directly to the U.S. Naval Archives in 1946. Both books in the report were classified SECRET at the time and were declassified in 1975. These two official USN books were called History of Submarine Operations in World War II and Submarine Operational History World War II. The books were used as references by Theodore Roscoe in 1949 (via Capt Voge) in U.S. Submarine Operations in World War II and in 1975 by Clay Blair in Silent Victory. The first book ( History of Submarine Operations in World War II ) has been entered into the St. Marys Museum computer to facilitate a April 2004 Edition distribution. The second book, which covers the operations and tactics of U.S. Submarines during WWII, will be entered into the computer and distributed by April 2005. Book one, History of Submarine Operations in World War II, is 17 chapters and covers the administration of the Submarine force from the 1930's peace-time force to the end of 1945 war time force. There are 394 pages in MS Word Format, just under 2-Meg of WWII Submarine history. Due to the ongoing amount of WWII Submarine information, corrected, changed or updated subsequent to the 1946 date, I will update each book annually in April, as updated information is discovered. The originalities of the books will be maintained in a standard font, with the technical changes in italic font format.
